The Help We Needed

ClownCollector

Early in February my husband, who is 91 but still very active, began complaining of a bad back ache. After as reasonable amount of time he visited his doctor. The doctor put him on a pill that was a combination muscle relaxer and pain pill, saying it was arthritis. This pill made him sick; the pain persisted and he became more and more miserable. In desperation, he asked me to drive him to the hospital emergency room. We spent an entire day there, had x-rays taken and he was once again diagnosed with arthritis. I wish I would’ve known, but my husband was being prescribed too many pills because I started to notice an unusual disorientation, confusion and weakness in him.

I then decided to call the reception desk here at Messiah Village to explain my situation to the receptionist and ask for help. Very shortly I received a call from Geli Losch, Director of Community Based Services, telling me she would like to visit and talk to us. Geli arrived shortly despite it being a Saturday and the second big snowstorm. She brought along the nurse on duty to help evaluate my husband. Fortunately, Geli knows my husband very well and could tell right away he was not himself. I proceeded to show them his medications and was told by the nurse to cease giving him the pills. They suggested we go to a different hospital by ambulance and get another opinion.

We agreed and after some discussion Geli called the maintenance people to clear our driveway. They were here before she hung up! She and the nurse then spoke with the hospital to inform them of our situation and the types of medications my husband had been taking. At this point I was concerned how we’d get home if we arrived via ambulance. Geli assured me that someone from the Village would be able to drive us home. I took along a list of my husband’s medications the nurse had written for us to give to the hospital staff.

The hospital discovered that my husband had a compression fracture of his lower spine and proceeded to give him correct treatment and got him off the other medications. He stayed overnight and the next day he was brought home by someone from the Village. Geli then worked to get him into Wagner, our rehabilitation neighborhood. He was there a few short days later and stayed about five days, receiving the care and physical therapy he needed.

I definitely feel that the preparation and efficiency on behalf of the Messiah Village employees helped us to get the care and attention we needed. He received out-patient physical therapy for the next week or so. Today he is nearly better and improving every day! Without Messiah Village and all the wonderful help and support we were fortunate to have, I don’t know what I would’ve done. So thanks to everyone involved and thanks to Messiah Village for being the wonderful place it is!

On Saturday, April 24 Messiah Village hosted our very first charity croquet tournament – Wicket on the Green! Yes, I said croquet! Unique, right?  Unlike a golf tournament, croquet can be played on our beautiful Nittany Lawn so there’s no need to travel. As a familiar backyard sport, croquet is something that can be enjoyed by all ages.

We hosted 21 amateur teams and 4 USCA professional teams! People came from Tennessee, Virginia, and Maryland to play…and the winners went home with great cash prizes, thanks to our main event sponsor, Turkey Hill Dairies!

You could feel the excitement in the air as blue skies broke across the beautifully prepared green lawn.  Some players were all in white, looking very genteel. Others donned arygle sweaters or crazy rainbow socks to add some fun to the game.   From the youngest player to the oldest, everyone had a grand time playing croquet, enjoying gourmet sandwiches and french fries, and listening to a fantastic guitar ensemble.  Best of all, the event created awareness of the Endowment Fund for Benevolent Care.  Some of the professional players made donations to Messiah Village before they left because they appreciated our mission and wanted to help!

Mark YOUR calendar for next year’s tournament – Saturday, April 30, 2011. You won’t want to miss the fun and camaraderie of this wholesome competition.  This year’s players have all been energized and many have said they’re coming back next year – but not until they buy new croquet sets so they can practice!  Maybe you should dust off the old mallets in your garage or basement and get some wickets in the ground this summer.  You just might be a Wicket on the Green champion next year!

WorldBlu Award – Principle 1

Emerson Lesher

To help celebrate our making the WorldBlu list, each week I will be including one of the ten principles that WorldBlu says make up a democratic workplace. It is a way for us to continue to encourage each other to live out these principles. The first principle is: Purpose and Vision. WorldBlu defines it this way – “A democratic organization is clear about why it exists (its purpose) and where it is headed and what it hopes to achieve (its vision). These act as its true North, offering guidance and discipline to the organization’s direction.”

Outside consultants and partners who work/visit Messiah Village often comment that people who work here know the mission statement, and they don’t usually find that to be the case. I hope you feel your work is important and part of something larger than all of us!

Breaking Soggy Ground in Mount Joy

PRGuruKristen

With all the excitement about the announcement that Messiah Village won the WorldBlu Most Democratic Workplace last week, little time was given to the big news that we broke ground in Mount Joy last Tuesday!

It may come as a surprise to some that  Messiah Village manages a small active adult community in Mount Joy called Mount Joy Country Homes. This is home to 50 residents living in 38 cottages.

Over the last year, we have been promoting the news that we are planning to transform the 8-acre retirement community to a 34-acre community with 114 cottages, a community center, assisted living, and commercial space. We are now ready to break ground on the first 10 cottages.

What is so “funny” about this ground breaking is that it rained. I can’t tell you the number of events we have tried to hold a Country Homes this past year that were rained out! It has been a running joke. So, we really should not have been surprised when it rained 4 hours early and just in time for the ceremony.

Thankfully, it didn’t stop more than 50 people from coming out to witness the historic event.

Carl Ginder who is overseeing the expansion spoke a few words and then he was joined by a team representing many different groups who are excited to see this project get started.

It was an exciting day to finally see the project begin. Everyone enjoyed celebrating afterwards.

Golden Mouse

What is a Golden Mouse? Here at Messiah Village our computer club is called the Golden Mouse Club (GMC). On Monday mornings residents can receive Golden Mouse member’s help at the Bailey Street Computer Lab. Residents have the privilege  of using GMC public computers at the Village Commons and in the Village Center.

At Golden Mouse Club meetings, and on the website, we learn new things. For instance if you go to www.goldenmouseclub.com, you can click Mousing Around and learn how to use the mouse. Or at the top of the home page click Links and you will find links to do interesting things on the internet! I’d like to tell you about a few links and you can investigate others on your own. First, scroll down almost to the bottom and click on Birthdays. Now type in a birth date, then click Quick Page, click Printable Version and you will have an interesting copy to mail with a birthday card.

Now let’s assume that you want a friend who lives elsewhere to know about your floor plan or about moving to Messiah Village. On the Link page click Messiah Village, then to the left side click Residential Living, next click floor plans and investigate.

Do you ever want to know what it says in a non-local newspaper? Maybe your grandchild or a friend is mentioned in an article. Click Newspapers, click a state, and click a newspaper name. Then slide across the links near the top and find the item you are interested in. I just read an item about Trinity High School, from which I graduated, and one about Gabby Heights where I grew up years and years and years ago!

Do you like hymns or bird songs? Near the bottom of the links page click Listen to Bird Songs or Cyber Hymnals Titles and chirp or sing along. Investigating the Golden Mouse Club site can be fun as well as a learning experience.

If you are a resident I would like to invite you to attend the Golden Mouse Club meeting on Friday, May 7 in the Community Room. We give individual help in the Bailey Street Computer Lab on Monday mornings. Also, I encourage you to suggest to your friends that on the Messiah Village homepage (over to the left) click MV Blog. Then they can read this Golden Mouse’s and other blogger’s stories and experiences!
