Celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day May 27


Senior couple on cycle rideWe know physical fitness and leading an active lifestyle is important no matter your age. But for seniors it is especially vital for a happier and healthier life in those “golden years.” That’s why it is important to note that later this month on May 27, an estimated 100,000 older adults will participate in organized fitness activities and events across the US as part of the 22nd annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day®. This year’s theme is “If You Keep Moving…You’ll Keep Improving!” Its essential goal is to help keep older Americans healthy and fit. As a group, those 65+ are becoming one of the largest and most influential segments in the country. This is especially due to the nearly 43 million baby boomers that will top out around 78 million^. Starting in 2011, an estimated 10,000 boomers a day are turning 65 years old! Through the miracles of modern medicine and technology, we are living far beyond retirement age. Therefore, the need and desire to stay active, healthy and engaged is becoming more and more important for seniors every single day.

Fortunately we reside in a very livable, affordable, mostly rural area that is easy to get around, navigate and take day trips. Additionally, this area also offers plenty of cultural, social and physical activity. Central Pennsylvania, in particular, is rich with historical significance, great entertainment and a plethora of outdoor recreation and activity no matter how old you are. Additionally, for residents of Messiah Village and clients and members of Messiah Lifeways, there is great access and exposure to a number of different enrichment and fitness programs both on and off campus to exercise the mind, body and soul.

In celebration of National Senior Health & Fitness Day, Messiah Lifeways Wellness is inviting all those 55 and better to join us on May 27 for a variety of fun and healthy living inspired activities.

9:30 am – SilverSneakers – Village Commons, Community RoomSenior Fitness

10:00 am – Disc Golf – Meet on Disc Golf Course at starting basket

11:00 am – Campus Dog Walk – Meet on Nittany Lawn (Please contact Chrylann Fons if you are interested in entering your dog in this activity)

11:30 am – Tai Chi Demonstration – Nittany Lawn

1:00 pm – Wii games – Terrace Room

1:00 – 3:00 pm – Join us for a mini health fair in the Village Commons Community Room

  • Balance Testing
  • Blood Pressure Screening
  • Body Fat Analysis
  • Chair Massages
  • Tai Chi Demonstration at 1:30 pm
  • Healthy Cooking Demonstration at 2:00 pm

2:00 pm – Arthritis Aquacize at the pool – Wellness Center Pool

Whatever activities you enjoy, Messiah Lifeways has so much from which to choose. But the important thing is that you have to get out there and keep active. Do something you love or try something new. And remember, “If you keep moving…you’ll keep improving.”
