In 1895, two sisters of the Brethren in Christ Church began discussions about creating a home for older people and orphan children. That day, a small seed was planted that has subsequently grown into the thriving and dynamic ministry now known as Messiah Lifeways.
That growth did not happen without struggle, and it certainly didn’t happen overnight. Many faithful servants of God gave sacrificially (and asked others to do the same) to answer God’s call in establishing the Messiah Rescue and Benevolent Home. Since those days, our Brethren in Christ founders and the early supporters of our benevolent mission continued to open their hands in generosity and love to ensure that residents of Messiah would always have a home. To that end, in 1939, an endowment fund was established with an initial gift of $10,000 to ensure our longevity and financial health. Today, that endowment has grown to more than $18 million, and the investment income generates more than $900,000 to offset the more than $3 million that Messiah Lifeways provides in Benevolent Care each year.
Messiah Lifeways continues to grow and expand in both physical spaces and through programmatic offerings. And, just as we did as our ministry began, we continue to rely on the generosity of donors to fund the vision and mission that God has given us to steward.
