About the Office of Volunteer and Donor Development

The purpose of our office is to advance our mission of responsibly enhancing the lives of older adults with Christ-like love. We do this by:

  • Inspiring donors to give generously to support priorities such as the Endowment Fund for Benevolent Care, capital and special projects on campus, and mission-centered services such as the Adult Day program in Carlisle and at Messiah Village.
  • Joyfully engaging more than 400 volunteers who faithfully serve in a variety of capacities, from driving shuttles to delivering water pitchers to singing with The Singing Men – and so much more!
  • Connecting with community members to create strategic partnerships to allow our organization to grow and remain at the forefront of our industry.

History of Philanthropy

In 1895, two sisters of the Brethren in Christ Church began discussions about creating a home for older people and orphan children. That day, a small seed was planted that has subsequently grown into the thriving and dynamic ministry now known as Messiah Lifeways.

That growth did not happen without struggle, and it certainly didn’t happen overnight. Many faithful servants of God gave sacrificially (and asked others to do the same) in to answer God’s call in establishing the Messiah Rescue and Benevolent Home. Since those days, our Brethren in Christ founders and the early supporters of our benevolent mission continued to open their hands in generosity and love to ensure that residents of Messiah would always have a home. To that end, in 1939, an endowment fund was established with an initial gift of $10,000 to ensure our longevity and financial health. Today, that endowment has grown to more than $18 million, and the investment income generates more than $900,000 to offset the more than $3 million that Messiah Lifeways provides in Benevolent Care each year.

Messiah Lifeways continues to grow and expand in both physical spaces and through programmatic offerings. And, just as we did as our ministry began, we continue to rely on the generosity of donors to fund the vision and mission that God has given us to steward.
